Re: fire rating plastic boxesFrom: Ralph Duncan CommentsJohn, sorry it took so long to get back with the requested information. I had to get some help from a manufacturer. The UL marking with 2hr rating was confusing & not described in the UL 514C standard. Information as I understand is as follows. UL 2hr fire rating does not indicate where the box may be used. NEC section 370 -16 further restricts how product bearing this information may be used. NEC requires product to be marked as to intended use. Ul514C states a Non-metallic single gang box may be used in a fire resistive cavity. Additionally this standard describes that NM boxes shall be marked as to where they may be used. Examples are as follows. Classification mark (UL) 2-hr-W-C indicates that a single gang box bearing this information may be used in a wall or ceiling cavity having a 2hr or less fire rating. Classification mark (UL) 2-hr-f indicates that a box bearing this information may be used in a floor assembly having a 2hr or less fire rating. Additionally, information regarding specific products that may be installed within this (f) area may be found in UL 514C. Floor boxes may only be used where receptacles are installed made of melamine phenolic or urea materials. I suspect that you Box marked Ul 2hr fire rating with appropriate investigation could be used in a wall cavity. However the information is not complete. John keep me informed if additional information is discovered. The web site reply function is not working properly, so I decided to reply with an e-mail. Not all listed products are required to be marked on the product. Check carton or obtain manufacturers spec sheet for greater detail.
